I didn’t ask for any of this. I didn’t ask to be some kind of hero.
But when your whole life gets swept up by a tornado – taking you with it – you have no choice but to go along, you know?
Sure, I’ve read the books. I’ve seen the movies. I know the song about the rainbow and the happy little bluebirds. But I never expected Oz to look like this. To be a place where Good Witches can’t be trusted, Wicked Witches may just be the good guys, and winged monkeys can be executed for acts of rebellion. There’s still a yellow brick road – but even that’s crumbling.
What happened? Dorothy.
They say she found a way to come back to Oz. They say she seized power and the power went to her head. And now no one is safe.
My name is Amy Gumm – and I’m the other girl from Kansas.
I’ve been recruited by the Revolutionary Order of the Wicked.
I’ve been trained to fight.
And I have a mission
My Rating: ★★★★☆
I went into this book with pretty high expectations because I have heard great things about it. So I was pretty pleased to find that I liked the writing style. I like the snarkiness of Amy. I enjoyed hearing about what it is like to have a parent that doesn’t really care for you. At least in what I imagine is a very truthful retelling.
At the beginning I could totally understand why Amy hates Madison. I freaking hate Madison. I hate her for more then just being a terrible bully. I hate her because she is using her freaking pregnancy to get Amy in trouble. I wish that I could go in the book and help Amy defend herself, because obviously at this point in time she has NO self confidence.
As we start going to Oz that’s when things start to pick up and get interesting. First we get back to Amy’s trailer, and there has been a tornado warning apparently. Her mother is just leaving her high and dry. In the middle of a tornado warning. A+ parenting there. Then the tornado comes. Because apparently that’s how women from Kansas get to Oz. Men use balloons.
After she lands in Oz she is awakened by this guy, who we later find out is named Pete. He helps her out of the trailer, which is perched on the edge of a huge ass chasm. The second he gets her out of the trailer it falls. And falls. And falls. Either the bottom is so far down you can’t hear when the trailer hits it, or there is no bottom. I think it’s the latter. Pete tells her to follow the road. Yep. That road. The Yellow Brick Road. And then he jumps off the edge of the chasm too. Creepy AF, right?
So she starts walking down the road with her moms pet rat Star with her. She is wondering what happened to Oz. And frankly, I was to. The magic had been literally drained away from the entire Munchkin Country. It looked bleak and boring. She eventually comes across a Munchkin girl named Indigo, and initially Indigo didn’t want to travel with Amy because outsiders are terrible. But she decides to do so anyways (mostly because she realized Amy can be freaking stupid after she tried to go talk to Glinda the Good Witch who isn’t so good anymore.) After continuing down the road they run into a flying monkey. Except he can’t fly anymore because he cut his wings off.
He is tied to a post, and even after Indigo telling Amy to NOT cut him lose, she does so anyways. See. Super smart here.
They end up…..I just feel like I am retelling the book. Not telling you how I feel about it. I guess I should start doing that now. It’s easy to get caught up in the moment I guess. So far in the book I still feel kinda iffy. It probably had something to do with the fact that I had no idea what was really going on in Oz.
They run into the Tin Woodman and he ends up killing Indigo, which I was pissed about. And the monkey, Ollie, ran away and just left Amy to fend for herself. Such a jerk. I knew she was stupid to let him go from the pole. So the Tin Man takes her to the Emerald City. To meet the ruler of Oz. Dorothy. Who had come back. Or been brought back. I wasn’t really to sure at this point.
At first Amy is doing good in front of her. Telling her things she wants to hear. Then she fucks up and tells her that there is a movie and that she came here the same way that Dorothy did. Now the Queen Bee (or Princess) is pissed because she is no longer special. I told you Amy wasn’t that smart sometimes.
Dorothy throws her in a jail cell. A week passes and she is supposed to put on trial, but Pete found this other Witch to come and save Amy. She just had to promise, or bind, herself to this order of witches. It’s not like she had much of a choice. I mean. Die, or go with the witches. Which one would you choose?
So she goes to the witches. And they tell her she has to kill Dorothy. She doesn’t really agree to do it, but again. She doesn’t have much of a choice. So they, a group of witches name Glamora (Glindas twin sister), Mombi (The witch that saved Amy), Gert (The leader), and Nox (A male witch or wizard or whatever.), start training Amy to kill Dorothy. There is apparently a plan too, but they aren’t telling her this. At least not yet.
Not until the Lion comes to the country they are in and they go fight him. And Gert dies. To save Nox and Amy. That’s when they decide to go ahead and tell her SOME of the plan. She is supposed to go BACK to the Emerald City and hide in the palace under disguise. And this works. For a time. Until she is stupid again and helps Ollie, YEP THAT OLLIE, get his sister out of the castle. This messes up everyones plan.
The person that was supposed to be helping her, and actually was helping her she just didn’t realize, took the fall for letting the monkey go. This means she died. In front of everyone. I personally don’t think Amy realizes how bad she has messed up until she messes up even more.
Sometime in the next few days Dorothy throws a party, just because she could, and this is when Amy was supposed to kill her for real this time. There is a perfect time to do it. Dorothy’s dress ripped so Amy suggests it’s time for a wardrobe change and takes her to the suite. Prime killing time right? If she hadn’t hesitated she would have been able to do it. But she did. So she wasn’t able to. Dorothy runs up a tower. Effectively trapping them both up there. Amy is hearing footsteps on the stairs and tackles Dorothy off the top of the tower. But Dorothy being smart and knowing magic transports herself away.
Amy is still falling. And then suddenly she is flying. It turns out that Ollie and his sister had found new wings and went to go save Amy. They take Amy to the center of this maze that is on the palace grounds. Here the Wizard is waiting along with Pete. Who then turns into Princess Ozma, who I forgot to mention was spelled by Dorothy to be stupid basically.
That’s it. That’s the end of the book.
I am currently reading the second one, and it’s a little more difficult to get through. But oh well.
All-in-all I thought it was an ok book. I went through it pretty fast. But wasn’t overwhelmed by it. I honestly don’t know if I would ever read it again.
